On Nov. 8, William Willis covered decentralized social network Mastodon’s reaching 1 million active monthly users amidst Twitter drama, The EU’s proposed data-sharing plan to increase the transparency of peer-to-peer rentals and Apple working toward simplifying its “Hey Siri” trigger phrase to just “Siri”. Hi again, everyone here the headlines from November 8th. First up in the wake of Elon musk's purchase of Twitter Mastodon, a decentralized social network has grown to over 1 million active monthly users. More and more people are switching to this new social platform after concerns about changes to Twitter's functionality and protest against Twitter's new paid verification option.
Prior to the purchase Mastodon received around 60 to 80 new user registrations per hour but has since grown into the thousands. Masted on acts similarly the Twitter by using hashtags replies in a feature similar to retweeting. However, it is ad-free and distributed across thousands of servers which makes it almost impossible for one entity to purchase it.
Next the European commission has proposed rules for a short-term rental platforms with the hopes that it will boost rental transparency in address several other issues. Well, the peer-to-peer rental platforms are popular options for European cities. They face opposition from residents of cities with high amounts of Tourism for driving up housing costs.
This proposal will include rules meant to improve the collection of data between hosts and Rental platforms, which will help inform local policies to tackle the challenges while also retaining the benefits of the online short-term rental sector. In other news apple is reportedly working on simplifying its digital assistant trigger phrase to just Siri which they plan to eventually roll out sometime next year. Apple has spent the past couple of months training Siri to respond to just one word as it requires.
A lot of AI training. It is much easier to understand two word trigger phrases in multiple accents and dialects. By working on this feature Apple seeks to catch up with Amazon's Alexa, which already uses a one-word trigger phrase.
Zooming out digital assistants have seen many changes recently as companies have been trying to integrate them deeper into third party AppSec and services while also improving their ability to understand users and process their commands. 36 billion dollars of Bitcoin from a man who was unlawfully obtained it over the dark web. The perpetrator pleaded guilty to committing wire fraud all the way back in September of 2012.
This plea comes with after a year after law enforcement recovered over 50,000 Bitcoin from the its residents. This has been one of the biggest mysteries for the doj in the past 10 years with it being the largest cryptocurrency seizure at the time in the second largest currently.
