On Nov. 3, William Willis covered the implementation phase of the European Union’s Digital Markets Act, Toyota’s drop in profits due to the computer chip shortages and Mozilla launch of a 35 million dollar venture capital fund. Hi again, everyone here the headlines for November 3rd. First up that you use digital markets act or dma came into Force earlier this week starting a six-month long implementation phase the dma seeks to end the unfair practices by big tech companies and help startups innovate and compete with them. Essentially the dma provides a list of do's and don'ts such as Banning platforms from ranking their own products higher and preventing pre-installed software on phones and computers the dma seeks to profoundly change the digital landscape but has seen much push back from Big Tech.
The implementation phase will end on May 2nd of next year before the ACT is completely rolled out. Next Toyota is announced its profits drop 31% in the most recent quarter. What is the blame you might ask computer chips Toyota cited.
The shortest computer chips is the number one factor in Decline and profits Toyota has also said the company faces many other problems such as rising interest rates High material costs in the ever-changing exchange rates. However, this isn't just Toyota's problem. The whole Auto industry has been hurt by supply chain crunches from the pandemic lockdowns.
In other news Mozilla is finally joining the likes of Google Microsoft and Salesforce as it launches a venture capital fund. Mozilla recently announced Mozilla Ventures a 35 million dollar VC fund targeted early stage startups specifically series a stage startups. Mozilla is also stated is looking for responsible companies that will push the tech industry in the right direction.
While the VC fund is new Mozilla has shown dedication towards responsible companies in the past as it is invested in nearly over 20 companies in the past decade and with this new fund it plans to invest in many more. Next up after a 12-hour public hearing a northern Virginia county has approved plans to build multiple data centers. The county voted five to two against opposition from environmentalists and conservationists.
Zooming out the number of data centers which help provide the cloud computing have grown dramatically in Northern Virginia. And while they can provide a huge Revenue boost to local governments, they come with their downsides most importantly environmental ones such as the incredibly large amounts of electricity that require is required to power these data centers. Which shows the interesting economy between technology and conserving the environment?
