Hi again, everyone. Here are the headlines for July 18th. First up, the US Federal Trade Commission has initiated an investigation into OpenAI over potential violations of consumer protection laws.
The agency sent a detailed letter to OpenAI requesting information about its AI technology, products, customers, privacy measures, and data security arrangements. The investigation aims to determine whether OpenAI engaged in unfair or deceptive practices related to privacy, data security, or consumer harm. OpenAI founder Sam Altman, expressed disappointment about the leak of the investigation, but stated that the company is committed to cooperating with the ftc.
Open Air has faced scrutiny in other countries as well, including temporary blocking of Chachi BT in Italy, and investigations by privacy watchdogs in France, Spain, Ireland, and Canada. The FTCs investigation represents a significant challenge for the growing AI industry as more countries try to regulate this new technology. The deal between OpenAI and AP highlights the importance of fact-based nonpartisan news content in the evolving field of AI technology, as well as addressing concerns about intellectual property protection and fair compensation for content creators.
In other news, Google announced that the expansion of its AI powered chatbot across Europe and in Brazil, making it available to a larger user base of hundreds of millions of people. The move comes as Google aims to compete with Microsoft, which uses open AI's chatt pt, and its Bing search engine. Bard was initially launched back in February, but faced delays in its rollout overseas due to privacy compliance concerns from regulators.
Google worked with experts, policymakers, and privacy regulators to address these concerns and made necessary changes, including increased transparency and user user controls. Additionally, Bard can now be used in over 40 languages and offer new features such as customizable tone and style, voice responses, and image analysis capabilities. Next up, Tesla's announced that its first production cyber truck electric pickup has been completed at, at its giga Texas factory, nearly two years behind the original schedule.
The company made the announcement by sharing a photo on Twitter showing that workers surrounding the truck Tesla initially had plans to start production in late 2021, But later caution that it would begin slowly in smaller numbers compared to other vehicles. The cyber truck with its distinctive wedge shape and stainless steel body deviates from the traditional pickup truck design, and some analysts have raised doubts about its broad appeal, considering it an niche product.
