Hi again, everyone here the headlines for August 9th. On Sunday, the US Senate passed the inflation reduction act a bill aimed at fighting climate change lowering drug prices and raising corporate taxes. It will go to the House of Representatives where it is expected to be voted on and passed as early as this upcoming Friday before being signed into law.
The bill itself has a 430 billion dollar price tag, and it is intended to reduce carbon emissions while also cutting prescription costs for the elderly and tightening enforcement on taxes for corporations. However, there is ongoing debate as to whether this bill will actually work towards lowering inflation. Next up.
It seems that the advertising slowdown isn't just affecting Tech Giants. You best television networks and news Publishers are experiencing similar slowdowns in the advertising market Warner Bros CBS The New York Times and USA Today have all stated that ad revenue is not what they expected during the most recent quarter. This ad slow down has become more apparent as rising inflation has begun to affect consumer spending.
These companies expect marketers to continue to pull back on ad spending from the dip and consumer spending, but overall advertising spending is expected to increase for the next year. Next in the news the Japanese tech company SoftBank group posted a 23 billion dollar loss in the most recent quarter. This is a shift from the 5 billion dollar profit in the same Corner last year.
Companies stated these losses are caused by the current Global uncertainty from the war in Ukraine as well as inflation and high energy costs. other factors that have caused these losses includes the recent drop in price of Alibaba, which SoftBank is a major investor in and the recent depreciating value of the Yen, which SoftBank has to pay back borrowings in Next a US appeals court rule then artificial intelligence cannot be an inventor. The court rejected a computer scientist named Steven Taylor's bid for patents on his AI created last Friday.
The court states that the patent act requires an inventor to be a natural person not in AI the AI is rejected patent bids include a beverage holder and a light Beacon. Taylor argues that denying AI patents undermines the purpose of the patent act limiting the progress of Science and useful Arts. Google has filed two new lawsuits against Sonos alleging that they are infringing on patents concerning smart speakers and voice control.
Specifically the first lawsuit focuses on wireless charging and hotword detection while the second focus is on speakers determining which should respond to a user's voice. Both lawsuits were filed on Monday with Google seeking to ban Imports on products infringing on these copyrights. This is only the newest lawsuit in a long-standing legal battle between the two companies over the past two years.
