Tanmai Gopal, Hasura | AWS re:Invent 2022

Hi everyone. We're back here at our AWS re:invent 2022 coverage at the win in our Tech strung TV Suite our next guest traveled a little bit of a way to see us here. To my gopal to my is with her.

Did I say it right? Yep, that's perfect. Okay, man my first well welcome and thanks for coming.

I know you had a hard time getting upstairs. Sometimes the Last Mile right? We had a Last Mile issue.

That's that's okay security downstairs. We we've we've tried our best to work with them here at the win and sometimes they're a little over zellates anyway. Hey, man, welcome.

Let's hear the hosaurus story. Yep. We I'm the CEO co-founder at Hustler started Hustler a few years ago from work that came out of a previous company that I used to run are kind of entire idea was that we're spending way too much time building apis for getting access to data, you know data is really important people who are using that data.

They need to build products that's important, but kind of building the plumbing that's required to get access to that data that's just grunt work. And so we figured out a way to automate that and we open source solution three and a half four years ago since then became really popular with developers and then we've just been adding support for more databases since then. You're being modest.

But I mean and they're nutshell. Yes, that is a sir, but you know give The better audience a sense of the scale of the company. Um, yeah, so we I think over the last few years we've grown to I think we were that like a hundred million downloads last year.

We're about 700 million downloads now. Just I think five of the fortune 10 users. I love saying like world's largest space tech company electric car company SAS company social media company.

So I think I think that's just amazing. That's enough. All right.

That is that graduation. That's really fantastic. And then you guys have a new.

Announcement you just recently made if you if you you know want to share it with the audience. Yeah, absolutely weirded, uh just added support for Snowflake and that's I think it's it's been one of the most asked for olap systems from our users. And and so that's going to be amazing.

We've I think it's our second olap store that we've added support for we did bigquery earlier this year and we added Athena just a few weeks ago and hot in the heels of this now we have snowflake. So that's why I think look I'm not expert in the space. But you know, we from what we see from our audience snowflake is he just a huge base?

It's massive users. And and you know, I would imagine that that's something really really out there. Yeah.

You know, I I try to explain to someone recently about horser. And it's basically graph XL apis. It creates a platform.

right that allows all of your apis to sort of yet. Yep work it. Oh, yeah, and again, I'm not I don't know it as well as you do.

But in my mind, it's almost like that mesh if you will. Yep, right that allows. It's an API mesh.

Yep. Yeah in this case graph XL. Exactly.

Exactly. I think that's that's the right way to think about it. I think if you if if you have a data system like snowflake, right and and you have applications that kind of phone to consume the data over an API or different teams or you're kind of sharing that data outside the organization you need to have apis that do that.

Another challenge here is that because you have so many different types of models inside that snowflake kind of database right or inside a bunch of other data stores creating apis for each of those models can get really cumbersome and so exactly what you said you want you want to kind of mesh that data together, right? So you want an API that can kind of Simultaneously fetched data from multiple places join it aggregated do stuff like that and and importantly return that data in a format that modern applications want to use right? If you look back to a few years ago the big part of the rise of Mongo was that it spoke Json right?

Right and it gave up on so many things at the time in Mongo initially started. It said no acid no Integrity. Right but people didn't get no security.

Right? Like that's how it started but the developers ask you exactly right and but developers just fell in love because they were like, this is Json. That's what I want to speak.

Right? And so these modern apis that kind of mash that data together and give you that Json format becomes really important for for people who are using the API and that's where kind of how Sarah and the graphql automation really really works. Well for people love it the back to the snowflake integration.

So this was announced December 6th. It's available on the hasura website already. Yep.

You can you can run it as a Docker container. You can run it off our cloud service connected to your existence. Let's talk, you know.

One of the interesting things about her sir. I don't think you said it so I'll say it right it's one of the it is the first open source in the Indian base unicorn. Yeah.

and I'll be honest with you. I'm I'm at the point where I I don't like to qualify things with something as India based or Israeli Bedford China based story. It's a unicorn right and there aren't that many of them, but that being said Seen such an explosion of Open Source business model, right and and I would say the most dominant one is hey use the open source Product download it use it.

It may not be the easiest thing to use and it may not be the most scalable thing because it's on your own infrastructure. But if you like it, you should pay for our hosted model, right? That's become the yep.

Dominant open source. Well, and that's pretty much the her Sarah model as well. Exactly.

And so what we do is we have kind of our open source solution that people can run deploy themselves. You can run it on your laptop and on-prem whatever you want. And then we have a managed cloud service exactly what you said where we take care of hosting it for you scaling it for you solve your dashing securing it all of that and and that's kind of our dominant.

Commercial delivery Vector. We also have an on-prem Enterprise version that has certain bells and whistles attached on top of the open source version that are important for Enterprises. We're running in kind of like, you know, compliant environments and stuff like that.

I one for large customers is world's largest healthcare insurance company and they have I you know in in that kind of a business where you have data for like 20 30 40 million users in a healthcare kind of setting it's it's really hard to innovate right and kind of freeing them up by giving them secure apis is so important and our Enterprise solution data on it and as a inside their own cloud and that's kind of another delivery Vector for us. So love it. So you hear at AWS re:invent with 55 or 54,999 other people?

I mean, yeah. What's your impression? It's been great.

I think this it's been we were we were here last year. That was our first reinvent. So it's been great.

I think the the quality of the kind of audience. The participants is Improvement that's been amazing large number of people for us personally. Also, I think the two big secular Trends around data and apis has kept exploding right just the like if you look at the reinvent announcements I I don't know what the right percentage would be maybe 50 to 75% were all just data.

It was all themed around data, right like new data sources new ways to integrate data new ways to get data from one place to another new way to govern. It's secure. It's all about the data.

It's almost like we rediscovered but it was always all about the data. We didn't think about yeah. Yeah, but yeah, no certainly data has become private.

So and so I think and I I think and that's such a that's that's really important for our business and that's kind of what we're enabling that we're saying. You have all this data you need to put it to use you need apis on it. Otherwise how people are going to use it.

You've done all the hard work of getting this data, right? So so, you know, it's been great for us, too. For sure is the way to unlock your data.
