Key Cybersecurity Takeaways from The Futurum Group’s Fernando Montenegro – Tech Field Day Takeaways
Fernando Montenegro, VP and Practice Lead for Cybersecurity Research at The Futurum Group, shares key reflections from his first Security Field Day. He praises the event’s format, noting its effective balance of in-depth discussions, transparency, and private breakout sessions that encourage candid vendor engagement. What stood out most to him was the diversity of cybersecurity vendors present, reflecting the growing importance and widespread interest in the field. Across various presentations, a common theme emerged: helping organizations better manage risk. Montenegro emphasizes that cybersecurity is increasingly aligned with business outcomes, drawing parallels to anti-fraud efforts, where the focus is directly tied to tangible impact. He sees this shift as a positive evolution in the industry.

Hi, I am Fernando Montenegro, VP of and practice lead Cybersecurity for research for at the, at the Futu group. So I'll say this in, in, in two ways. First, there's the takeaway about the format itself, right?
And I love the format because it's a very good mix of enough depth to have conversations with the, the vendors with the right amount of openness and transparency to have conversations in camera about some things, and then the breakout sessions where we can go into things that perhaps they, they, they may want to discuss more in private. And I absolutely love that. The other thing I found interesting then is, this is my first security field day, is that we have, uh, a mix of vendors attending that speaks to how widely available and how much interest there is in cybersecurity in that we had significant, uh, conversations with vendors who have very distinct portfolios, but all of them covering cybersecurity.
I think that the, the broader topic that stands out, we saw four different major presentations that they're all covering different topics. The one that comes out all together the most is that how important cybersecurity is and how I, if there was one theme I would, I would say is that how are we helping organizations manage risk overall? I think that, that the, uh, this evolution of the cybersecurity industry is one of the, the most interesting, broader themes that we're following.
I'm excited about how much closer we are getting to helping organizations with business outcomes, right? I have this running joke that they, uh, I say that, uh, go back to high school calculus. The limit of cybersecurity as time goes to infinity, right?
I mean, the future of cybersecurity is very, very close to anti-fraud. And one of the things that's interesting about anti-fraud is this notion of being very, very tied to business outcomes. And that's where security is going.
We're helping organizations with things that are having more material impact on them. I think that's awesome.
