The Role of Data Protection in AI Readiness
At AI Field Day 7, Brian Babineau, Chief Customer Officer at HYCU, outlined the company’s direction and how data protection plays a crucial role in AI readiness. He introduced his team and emphasized HYCU’s mission to ensure complete data protection and recoverability, especially as businesses embrace AI technologies and shift workloads to the cloud. Babineau drew on his experience in cybersecurity and MSP environments to underscore the urgency of resilient data strategies in the face of modern threats, including cyberattacks and accidental deletions.
Babineau discussed how AI is transforming IT, especially with integrations into existing business applications and the growing importance of AI-specific architectures like vector databases. HYCU is aligning its R&D and product development strategies to support these emerging data environments. The presentation explained that as data moves into second and third generation public cloud environments, new gaps in data availability and protection are becoming evident. HYCU is focused on addressing these risks to ensure that data feeding AI models is both secure and recoverable, which is fundamental for trust and innovation in AI systems.
To reinforce resilience, Babineau highlighted HYCU’s R-Cloud platform, which offers flexibility in backup and recovery options across multiple environments—on-prem, cloud, multi-cloud, and edge. The emphasis was on giving customers the freedom to protect and recover workloads from any location, preventing vendor lock-in and increasing operational flexibility. Strategic partnerships with companies like Dell and Okta, and support from top-tier investors such as Bain Capital, position HYCU to scale its offerings globally. The ability to manage data across complex infrastructures makes HYCU’s solutions increasingly relevant in an AI-powered enterprise landscape.

Hello Everybody, and thank you for the opportunity to share an update Of Haiku, uh, our, uh, our business pro, uh, our base business Progress in our lifecycle, and, uh, a little Bit about how we view AI as a catalyst, Um, and the change agent for the Data Protection industry. Uh, My name's Brian Babinal. I'm the Chief Customer Officer at Hi HighQ.
I've been here for about A year. Uh, aside From a brief introduction, you'll hear from the subject matter Experts. Um, AYA, Uh, Sunam runs products for usia Senon, uh, heads Up our cloud efforts.
Uh, Andy Fernandez is in the room who runs product marketing and our, our media contact and, uh, primary lead here, Don Jennings is Also with us To help answer any questions that the audience, um, and attendees might have. Uh, I just a little bit about Me, I've, Uh, I've just Passed my year anniversary With, uh, with, uh, After joining Haiku. Um, Previously I spent about a Decade with Barracuda, Uh, run, starting building and running their, Uh, their, Uh, MSP managed Service provider division, uh, where We, uh, we had Several different acquisitions, uh, went from public to private and private To private, uh, But really understood the market dynamics of what was happening in the, in the cybersecurity landscape in the mid-market, as Well as the data Protection aspect.
Um, that if The, Uh, prevention mechanisms in Cybersecurity, uh, Uh, did not cover Everybody. There was, uh, a critical role, of course, Uh, when something went wrong to be able to get data back and get a business up and running. Uh, today, uh, Uh, our intent is to make sure that you Leave with, uh, with The following information.
Um, There, we, we believe there's, uh, A good amount of Workloads that have Either transitioned or are now going through second and Third Phases in the public Cloud, And there's some air Gaps, Uh, from a data protection and availability standpoint that Are Starting to manifest. Wanna make sure that, Uh, that The audience is aware Of, of what those are, uh, why they create risk. Secondarily, I think there's, uh, There's a good amount of talk on AI and how people are using it and, uh, exist Or With existing business applications are creating new one.
And where does The data sets, Um, pre and post, uh, generation go and how they're being used and why many of our customers are calling us about What, What our plans are for Support. Um, you know, one of the underpinning a, uh, elements of architecture inside of the AI Workflows is the vector Databases and why, Uh, And Why some of the questions that We've gotten in, um, have spurred Different RD investments and attention, uh, throughout Our, uh, through our product Development lifecycle. And then, uh, Lastly, We wanna make sure that, uh, any, Whatever we protect, we do so In a high, uh, in a high integrity fashion, making sure that it is Recoverable, uh, uh, When needed and when called upon.
So I think, uh, you'll Hear a phrase or two about Coverage and the ability For us to Not just, uh, generate the copy, but when called upon to generate The, Generate the Recovery, Um, that really truly defines resilience for us. Uh, we are On a singular mission to make sure That all data is protected In the event of any type of Business Disruption, whether it's manmade, Cybersecurity related, Some combination thereof, accidental deletion, Um, uh, or other Events, um, through that mission and was one of the motivating factors For, Uh, for me to join, uh, Uh, This organization and this team. Um, the other motivating factor Was just how quickly We've been able to execute against that mission.
So world Class backers, Uh, from a financial standpoint, ranging from those That build Applications, Uh, those that Are building infrastructure For the Applications As well as those that Have funded m many, uh, many other, uh, unique organizations. So, uh, Bain and a crew being the, the top, uh, financial backers, But as you see, they're Okta, um, certainly playing a key role in the identity space, um, in having a purview into how to Protect those Identities, even in an agentic world. Um, It is awesome to be the chief customer officer For across Nearly 5,000 customers in, in, uh, across a Broad geographic area.
Um, and, uh, we're doing so with the channel front and center with us. I think probably The, the mix of channel, whether It be our Dell relationship, Uh, a relationship That we have on the, on the cyber side with Conversant, uh, across many of those that bring our products to market, Um, Serving those customers. Uh, We continue to be challenged every day With their Feedback.
And as I mentioned in the agenda, we want to, we, we want to Art clearly articulate to this group how that has Updated and evolved our own thinking and our own product, Uh, product release schedule, as well as, uh, updated Where we think, uh, things will be in the next couple of Years. And, Uh, how we do it across such a broad Set of customers as Well as, uh, Within the partner landscape Is truly the R Cloud Platform. Uh, Resilience here For us means that you have The ability to, uh, cover As many, uh, Workloads as possible.
Uh, being able to Discover those, Obviously, get the, get, get the right type of, uh, of copy going to any location, your choice as a destination, whether it be a cloud provider, uh, a large clear cloud scale like an Amazon or Google, or somebody that's, uh, really driving the lead in optimized cost, like a wasabi, um, or somebody that's looking for, to utilize their Dell investments with data domain. Um, where we put it, how we protect it, where we put it is just as important because that also helps out in how we recover it. Um, and then I mentioned a little bit, we wanna give customers the freedom of choice.
Do they want to protect it in their own sovereign location? Do they want to do it in a data center? Do they want to do it?
Uh, and then probably the most important part of that freedom is where do they want to get it back from? So are you moving, are you protecting, uh, a cloud asset in, uh, Google and recovering it in Microsoft, or you're doing something in Azure and you wanna bring it back to your on on-prem? That flexibility, um, isn't necessarily always appreciated when we first talk to customers, but it's certainly appreciated after they go through a series of business events and don't want to be captured within a particular geographic area or a particular, uh, technologies.
